Aquaterra completed an update of the emergency action plan for the Lake of Egypt dam located in Marion, Illinois. Lake of Egypt is power plant lake operated and controlled by the Southern Illinois Power Cooperative (SIPC). The emergency plan update was completed to meet the requirements of the United States Department of Homeland Security as outlined in the FEMA Document 64 Federal Guidelines for Dam Safety –Emergency Action Planning for Dam Owners – April 2004 (D-64). The emergency plan update included the following components:
General responsibilities review by the SIPC as the dam owner for notification internally and externally utilizing a notification flow chart for SIPC personnel and local emergency response agencies and radio/television media outlets; evacuation planning for the dam area and specifically for downstream residences located within the expected inundation areas identified during the assessment of downstream flooding caused by a dam breach.
- Preparedness review by the SIPC to confirm the SIPC facility and the surrounding area are prepared for a possible Lake of Egypt dam break.
- Training programs were outlined for SIPC to implement regarding necessary emergency action requirements.
