Aquaterra completed the design of an extended wet detention basin (EWDB) at a sand and gravel facility near Kansas City, Kansas. Storm water routed to the EWDB discharges directly into the Kansas River, an Outstanding National Resource Water.
The primary potential source of storm water contamination for the site is erosion of unvegetated slopes and sediment caused by residual sand and gravel from dredged material stockpiles previously located on site. The EWDB was chosen as the BMP best suited for treating storm water from the facility by means of sediment capture. The EWDB was designed to provide a 40 hour drawdown time for runoff produced by the water quality storm event to allow sediment to settle in the permanent pool, incorporating a littoral bench to support wetland vegetation and provide further storm water treatment capabilities and flood control.
The EWDB was designed according to the procedures outlined in the 2008 Manual of Best Management Practices for Storm Water Quality developed by the Kansas City Metro Chapter of the APWA and the Kansas City Mid American Regional Council. The design components included the sizing and modeling of the EWDB and outlet structure, storm water flow calculations, development of the site grading plan, and sizing and designing a letdown channel for the storm water discharge. Aquaterra provided additional assistance with permitting for a USACE Nationwide Section 404 permit for construction of the letdown channel below the ordinary high water mark of the Kansas River, as well as with the modification of the NPDES permit compliance program.
